Full Throttle Rock

It's not just rock music that may be "finally dead," KISS magnate Gene Simmons theorized during a rundown of his favorite songs for MusicRadar last week, but pop as well. The musician asserted Friday (May 10) that the more mainstream side of music is governed by an industry that "sets the rules" and dictates how songs should sound, effectively rendering artists "handcuffed" to such restrictions.

While identifying the Beatles and Little Richard as some of the artists that "blew [his] mind" in his formative years, the KISS bassist and vocalist defended today's top pop artists while snubbing their business environs.

"These days we have the talent — [Lady] Gaga, Bruno Mars, Adele, all great artists," Simmons said. "But they're handcuffed by the industry. The industry sets the rules and says rap has to sound like this; soul has to sound like this; EDM has to sound like this. Fucking pathetic!"

He continued, "I don’t want to sound like one of those miserable, moany guys that says, 'Man, everything was better back then.' But when it comes to music… shit, it was so much better! When I heard it, it changed my life forever!"

The recent comments follow Simmons' frequently dissected take on the "death of rock". As he told Esquire in 2014, "Rock did not die of old age. It was murdered. Some brilliance, somewhere, was going to be expressed, and now it won't, because it’s that much harder to earn a living playing and writing songs. No one will pay you to do it."

Looking back on his musical beginnings, however, the KISS figurehead now lovingly recalls the ten iconic tracks that helped shape his early understanding of rock music. Most of them — including tunes by Led Zeppelin and King Crimson — hail from a markedly different time, the musician said.

"You asked me to pick 10 tracks that blew my mind. I could have picked a hundred… a thousand," Simmons stated last week. "That was what it was like to be a music fan in the 50s and 60s. … You had the Beatles next to Diana Ross next to Zeppelin next to Hendrix next to Yes next to James Brown next to the Kinks. … Every week, there seemed to be another 20 new songs that just stopped you dead in your tracks."

Ahead of Judas Priest's back-to-back nights at the Palace Theatre in Albany, NY on May 18 and 19, Albany Times Union has released a new interview conducted with frontman Rob Halford. Read an excerpt below:

Playing two nights in a row does have its perils for Halford as a vocalist. He has to perform carefully so he can maintain the ability to hit the piercing high notes and offer up the operatic vocal style that's made him one of the greatest and most beloved lead singers in heavy metal history.

"On this tour, we're doing lots of songs I haven't done in a long time," he noted. "I have to find a way of finding a comfort zone, otherwise things can get really difficult and it's very easy to blow your voice out.

"It's all about technique, I have to really think through the set," Halford added. "I'm lurching toward 68, most people this age would be in retirement. I'm a relic on the metal altar. I laugh about it because I love it so much."

Guns N' Roses Wanted Izzy Stradlin For Reunion

Posted on May 15, 2019 at 9:45 PM Comments comments (0)

Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan has confirmed that the group invited former bandmate Izzy Stradlin to join them on the Not In This Lifetime reunion tour.

Launched in the spring of 2016 and wrapped up last December in Hawaii, the trek saw McKagan reteam with Axl Rose and Slash for the multi-year series, which went on to become one of the most successful in music history.

Now, McKagan says Stradlin was offered a chance to perform alongside the trio. "That is something that we tried to make happen at the beginning," the bassist tells 92.9 The Bear in Loveland, CO while promoting the May 31 release of his new album, "Tenderness." "It just didn't work out."

Stradlin - who co-founded Guns N' Roses with childhood friend Rose in 1985 - first shot down rumors of his involvement in the tour in 2016, before the singer commented on the rocker's status in a fall 2016 interview with Brazilian TV, explaining: "I don't really know what to say about Izzy. It's, like, you could have a conversation and think it's one way and the next day it's another way. And I'm not trying to take any shots at Izzy. It's just his thing is kind of his thing, whatever that is."

Rose's comments earned a prompt online reply from Stradlin in a tweet (since deleted), saying his absence from the reunion was about money: "They didn't want to split the loot equally. Simple as that."

Last year, former Guns N' Roses manager Alan Niven revealed that Stradlin bailed on a guest appearance with the band in 2017.

"[Izzy] did get as far as flying out and doing a soundcheck, and he left after a soundcheck, he didn't want to have anything to do with it," Niven told the Appetite For Distortion podcast. "It was last year, it was somewhere out in the midwest, when they were doing stadiums. Obviously had it gone well and everybody had been happy, and there had been a little bit of brotherhood, I'm sure he would have stayed with it. But something must have really upset him, because he left after the soundcheck, and never turned up for another one or an appearance. I would think right now he is probably a little pissed off."

TWISTED SISTER's EDDIE OJEDA Is Moving To Nashville: 'It's Just An Easier Way Of Life Down There'

Posted on May 15, 2019 at 9:40 PM Comments comments (0)

During a recent appearance on the "22 Now" show, TWISTED SISTER guitarist Eddie Ojeda revealed that he is relocating from New York to Nashville.

"There's a lot of people that have moved to Nashville — rock musicians," Eddie told "22 Now" host and TWISTED SISTER bandmate Mark Mendoza (see video below). "I mean, a lot. The list is endless. Every time I go down, I find out somebody else is living there. And it's just an easy place to get around. There's no tolls… It's just an easier way of life down there. And the music scene there is awesome. How many places do you get off a plane and see a Les Paul [guitar]? There's guitars everywhere. Every bar or restaurant you go to, there's some kind of tribute to the guitars. They call it Music City for a reason. It's starting to become one of the major places. I think Warner has a place down there… has a main office. Some of the big music companies are down there as well, like ASCAP and BMI. They used to just be based out of New York and Los Angeles."

Asked if he is planning to make any new music once he gets down to Nashville, Eddie — who recently became a grandfather — said: "Once I get settled in, I'll see what's happening. I'll see what comes across… Even just the few times I've been down there, people I've bumped into, everybody's into doing stuff together. It's a lot harder to do that here for some reason. And also, New York is getting pretty pricey, man… Manhattan is out of reach. Somebody who's a janitor is gonna have to make six figures to live in Manhattan… There's a lot of traffic and it's busy in Nashville too, but not like here."

TWISTED SISTER retired from the road three years ago after completing a farewell 40th-anniversary tour. The band's last-ever concert took place in November 2016 — 20 months after the passing of TWISTED's longtime drummer A.J. Pero.

Ojeda released a solo album in 2006, "Axes 2 Axes", featuring guest appearances by such acclaimed hard rock/heavy metal vocalists as Ronnie James Dio (DIO, RAINBOW, BLACK SABBATH), Dee Snider (TWISTED SISTER), and Joe Lynn Turner (RAINBOW, DEEP PURPLE, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN). Rudy Sarzo (QUIET RIOT, WHITESNAKE, DIO, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN) played bass on two tracks, with Chris McCarvill handling the rest. Drummer Joe Franco (TWISTED SISTER, VINNIE MOORE, JACK BRUCE) played on the entire record. The cover artwork for "Axes 2 Axes" was conceived by German artist Timo Wuerz.

Motley Crue may have more chance of entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame than the band members themselves believe, a new poll suggests.

Visitors to the hall’s museum in Cleveland, who have the opportunity to vote in the Voice Your Choice campaign, have put the band in the No. 1 spot ahead of Blink-182, Iron Maiden, the Dave Matthews Band and Weezer.

Citing the Crue biopic The Dirt as the source of their surge in popularity, Cleveland.com reported that Stevie Nicks’ induction as a solo artist earlier this year came after she topped the Voice Your Choice poll – even though Rock Hall executives denied a connection between the two events. “Though, it does seem like a strange coincidence since she’d never been nominated before as a solo artist,” the report noted.

Drummer Tommy Lee shared the article on Twitter, commenting, “Let’s go kids!” Only those who visit the museum can submit in the Voice Your Choice poll. It’s not directly associated with the Rock Hall fan vote, which is open globally in the run-up to each year’s awards.

Earlier this year, bassist Nikki Sixx claimed his band had been blackballed by the Rock Hall. “I was actually doing an interview with Tommy a couple of weeks ago, and we were asked if we would ever play together again,” he recalled.

“Tommy said, ‘I don’t know. Maybe if we got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or something, we could dust off a couple of our old classics.’ I was, like, ‘Really?’ And he said, ‘Why not?’ But we don’t have any plans because we were told by the Hall of Fame that we would never get in, because of how we’ve acted, so that’s kind of it.”

While providing the Top 10 as it currently stands, the new report also suggested that Blink-182 could retake the lead position when “a ton of pop-punk fans flock to the museum this summer for the Warped 25th anniversary concert on June 8.”

You can see the current standings below.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Voice Your Choice Poll:

1. Motley Crue

2. Blink-182

3. Iron Maiden

4. Dave Matthews Band

5. Weezer

6. Freddie Mercury (Solo)

7. Cher

8. Phil Collins (Solo)

9. Rage Against the Machine

10. Boston

Guitarist Nita Strauss joined Evanescence onstage at the 2019 Epicenter Festival in North Carolina last week for a rousing performance of "Disappear." The song — receiving a live boost from the Alice Cooper band member and solo artist on Friday (May 10) — was first released as a bonus track on the Amy Lee-led group's eponymous 2011 album.

During Evanescence's headlining Epicenter slot, the two artists launched the unexpected concert collaboration in front of an enthusiastic festival audience, some of whom captured the action in real time. Watch the videos down toward the bottom of this post.

The gig from Evanescence could signal the start of a new era for the band. Both Strauss and Evanescence are out on respective U.S. tours throughout the summer, the former performing a pair of shows alongside Fozzy Wednesday (May 15) and Thursday (May 16). View all the dates after the clips.

CJ SNARE: Why FIREHOUSE Fans Shouldn't Hold Their Breath For New Music

Posted on May 15, 2019 at 9:05 PM Comments comments (0)

In a recent interview with "Another FN Podcast", FIREHOUSE singer CJ Snare was asked if there are any plans for the band to release new music. "That's a good question," he replied (hear audio below). "It comes up often. I think that the inkling is there. We're together a lot, 'cause FIREHOUSE never stops touring, and we talk about this all the time.

"I think if we can find the right riff, the right hook," he continued. "Because we have kind of a sound, we have a bit of a legacy and some sterling songs that are indelibly stamped in time, and we don't wanna diminish that in any way, shape or form. Of course, as an artist, you have to also have the testicular fortitude to put your head out there on the chopping block; you've just gotta go for it. So we have entertained the idea of possibly doing a single."

Snare went on to say that releasing new music is "not what it used to be. I don't know that it sells any more concert tickets.

"Do you like hearing new music from older bands? Do you really wanna hear them play that in their set at a show, or would you prefer to hear the old classic standards? And that's part of the discussion when FIREHOUSE is entertaining the idea of doing new music.

"Has Frontiers Records approached us? Of course they have," Snare admitted. "Have we entertained the idea? Of course we have. But we think about it, and it's, like, we have such a large catalog of songs to draw on right now that we can bring out something from a more obscure album and people will think of it as a new song. 'I never heard that before. That was great.'

"I've gotta tell you, sometimes when [I see other older artists releasing new music], I'm going, 'Jeez, do I wanna take all that time and effort and energy and put it into that? And there's that artistic side of me that's, like, 'Absolutely! Hell yeah! Fuck yeah!' And then there's that other side of me, which is, like, 'And how will that fit into the set of the nuts and bolts and the day to day of what we're doing out here on the road?'"

FIREHOUSE hasn't released a studio album since 2011's "Full Circle", which featured re-recorded versions of some of the band's older songs. The group's last collection of new material, "Prime Time", came out in 2003.

FIREHOUSE reached stardom during the early '90s with hits like "Reach For The Sky", "Don't Treat Me Bad" and "All She Wrote", as well as its signature power ballads "I Live My Life for You", "Love Of A Lifetime" and "When I Look Into Your Eyes".

Glenn Hughes reschedules UK tour dates

Posted on May 15, 2019 at 9:00 PM Comments comments (0)

Earlier this week, Glenn Hughes was forced to postpone his Deep Purple Live UK tour.

The eights shows were due to get under way this week, but were called off due to an illness affecting the vocalist and bassist.

But he’s wasted no time in announcing the rescheduled dates, which will now take place in November – although the tour has been cut to just four dates.

The shows in Edinburgh, St Albans, Liverpool and Nottingham have been cancelled, while the performances in Salisbury, Holmfirth and Birmingham will go ahead. The Norwich show, which was originally scheduled to take place at the UEA, has now been moved to the city’s Waterfront.

The new dates are:

Nov 17: Salisbury City Hall

Nov 20: Norwich Waterfront

Nov 23: Holmfirth Picturedrome

Nov 29: Birmingham O2 Institute

Fans looking for refunds will have until May 27 to contact the point of sale.

The postponement was accompanied by a statement which read: “Glenn sends his regrets that he is unable to perform his UK tour which was due to start May 14 through May 24.

“He needs to be treated for an illness that, while not life threatening, must be dealt with immediately in order for it to not become a serious problem.

“He is expected to make a full recovery and be back on the road in June.”

Hughes’ next scheduled show will take place in Ballyshannon on June 1, which will be followed by further shows across Europe this summer.

Steven Tyler and Marilyn Manson Jam With Hollywood Vampires

The Hollywood Vampires were joined by a pair of special guests during their show at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on May 11th and video of the jams have been shared online.

The second date of the supergroup's west coast spring run saw, as Rolling Stone notes, Steven Tyler join his Aerosmith bandmate Joe Perry for the vintage 1951 track, "Train Kept A-Rollin'," while Manson delivered a rendition of Alice Cooper's 1970 hit, "I'm Eighteen."

Led by Cooper, Perry and Johnny Depp, The Hollywood Vampires will release their second album, "Rise", on June 21. "Rise is not only a totally different animal than the first Vampires album, it is unique to anything I've ever been a part of," explains Cooper. "I approached it very differently than I usually do when working on an album. Each of us; Joe, Johnny, Tommy and myself have written songs on this album. What is different though is that I didn't try to change any songs to be more 'Alice-like.'"

The group will wrap up their seven-date spring series in Indio, CA on May 18.

Robert Plant admitted he sometimes “missed the mark” with the material he wrote with Led Zeppelin, noting that he was moving in a different direction from other writers of the era.

He also revealed that his thinking about the band’s one-off 2007 reunion was inspired in part by Pink Floyd’s final gathering two years earlier.

“My peer group were writing substantial pieces of social commentary, and I was willowing along the Welsh borders thinking about Gollum,” Plant told Planet Rock magazine in a new interview. “I liked what I did, but now I look at it and go, ‘Wooh, that was a bit iffy.’ But I do like ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ I can look at it objectively. I can’t always get my head around it, but it does do something substantial.”

Led Zeppelin staged their return to mark the achievements of late Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun. Even though his colleagues hoped to perform more shows, Plant insisted he was never interested in the idea. “I liked what Floyd did at Live 8 [in 2005],” he said. “[A] quick one-off and let’s leave it at that. They did it for a good cause."

He noted that "it was the same when Zeppelin did the charity show for Ahmet. We had a prolonged affinity with Ahmet, so if there was ever a reason for [a reunion] to happen, that was it. But the idea of doing it next summer and summer after that and so on is enough to break me out in hives.”

JUDAS PRIEST's RICHIE FAULKNER On Music-Streaming Services: 'There's Pros And Cons Everywhere'

Posted on May 14, 2019 at 10:30 PM Comments comments (0)

In a brand new interview with "Arroe: View From The Writing Instrument", JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Richie Faulkner was asked for his views on music-streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. He said (hear audio below): "Like everything these in the connected age that we live in, there's pros and cons everywhere. I've seen younger people… When things go away, like vinyl, when vinyl comes back again, they haven't seen it, so it's something new, and they're not interested in on-demand music — they want something tangible; they want something they can hold and look at.

"It's great to have music that accessible — where if you wanted to go and get it, you just go and get it," he continued. "But at the same time, I understand how it's changed the industry.

"I think there's always a way to get your music out there, and people are finding ways of doing that," he added. "No one's figured it out completely, I don't think, but everyone's tried to make it work. Again, there's pros and cons everywhere, man."

Faulkner joined PRIEST in 2011 as the replacement for original guitarist K.K. Downing.

Richie was once the guitarist in the backing group for Lauren Harris, daughter of IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris.

JUDAS PRIEST has just returned to the United States for a run with fellow classic heavy rockers URIAH HEEP. The 32-date trek kicked off on May 3 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida and will wrap on June 29 at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

JUDAS PRIEST is touring in support of its latest album, "Firepower", which was released in March 2018 via Epic. The disc entered the Billboard 200 chart at position No. 5, making it the band's highest-charting album ever.

The "Firepower" chart position was bolstered by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer in association with the band's spring 2018 North American tour.

Watch part 2 of video series charting Led Zeppelin's history

Last month, the first part of a video series charting the history of Led Zeppelin was released.

It concentrated on the recording of the band’s self-titled debut album in September 1968 at London’s Olympic Studios and featured live footage of the band and facts and figures behind the album, which would see the light of day in 1969.

You can watch Part 1 here:

The second part has now been launched and examines how The New Yardbirds became Lead Zeppelin, to eventually becoming Led Zeppelin.

Watch the clip below:

The video series has been released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Led Zep, which will also include a forthcoming documentary about the band.

The project is being helmed by Bernard MacMahon and will focus on their early days through to 1970, when Led Zeppelin II ousted the Beatles’ Abbey Road from the top of the US charts.

The film has been written by MacMahon and Allison McGourty, who will also handle production duties alongside Duke Erikson and Ged Doherty. Dan Gitlin will be the project’s editor, while Nicholas Bergh is on sound supervision.

Levine spoke with Rudy Blair Entertainment Media about the honour, saying "we were the three musketeers. We never met a door that we couldn't drive a semi through. If the door was closed, we said, 'Fuck it! Let's open that.' People said, 'You can't do that,' and we went, 'Yes, we can....' (laughs). 'No, you can't do that. It's not done...' and we said, 'Oh, yes, we will.' (laughs). But I think we survived because of our sense of humour. Not only the music and the show and all that, but I think, as a band, the laughter that we had and the fun we had together, as well as the hard work."

Responsible for such hits as "Magic Power", "Lay It On The Line", "Move On", "Fight The Good Fight", and a heavy rendition of the Joe Walsh classic "Rocky Mountain Way", Triumph became an indie trailblazer during its 1975 - 1988 heyday as a popular arena and stadium act in North America and Europe, earning millions of dollars through touring as they quickly became a headlining act.

Earning 18 gold albums and 9 platinum albums from the two territories separated by a border, "Canada's Rock 'N Roll Machine" set the standards for other rockers with their elaborate sound system and lighting.

Speaking on behalf of co-presenter and fellow agent, Ralph James, Vinny Cinquemani - Triumph's agent, "since the day their first album (Triumph, on Attic Records) came out - said he was proud to "present Mike Levine, Gil Moore and Rik Emmett - Triumph, Canada's Rock 'N Roll Machine - with the Legends of Live Award."
